Soil & Dust Solutions was retained to provide dust control solutions for an open-pit mining operation in Botswana.  The objectives were to improve visibility, road safety, and production efficiency. After proper preparation of the area which only entailed a sweeping of the surface, A water truck was used to apply a surface application of Durasolution to the road surface. This proved to be an effective dust suppression treatment which was also effective on fugitive dust. This treatment negated the need for water for dust suppression and provided a much safer driving environment than previous methods and products used by the mine.

Nkomati Nickel contacted Soil Solutions to provide a dust abatement solution for the haul road for their mine located in Machadodorp, South Africa. Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African agent for Soil Solutions provided technical assistance with the preparation of the road and the application of the Durasolution product. Durasolution was chosen for this project as the main objective was for dust prevention and the haul road sees frequent traffic from tracked vehicles which would cause damage to a stabilized wearing course surface. Durasolution starts working upon contact and continues to perform even when the soil is re-worked, thus effectively eliminating the need for grading, watering, or any other form of dust control. The initial application can perform for prolonged periods, with minimal maintenance required.

The test sections constructed by Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African Agent for Soil Solutions, at ASSMANG BKM Khumani Iron Ore Mine in South Africa, underwent the most extensive on-site testing ever conducted for an alternative soil stabilizer. These results together with independent accredited laboratory testing conducted by Geostrada and Africon led to the contract to construct the mine haul roads being awarded to Soil & Dust Solutions, as well as the Crusher Tip area (the largest Crusher tip in the southern hemisphere), which as of May 2009, had seen over 2.5 million tonnes of haulage with no wear or tear. The result and performance level obtained by Soil & Dust Solutions has yet to be matched by any other construction methodology.

The in-situ material was tested in the laboratory, the mix design was determined and then the construction began. The subgrade was constructed to the proper finish grades and elevations (line and levels) as indicated on the plans. The amount of water required to bring the material to the Optimum Moisture Content for compaction was determined using the proctor test. The surface was scarified to depth and the EBS was added and uniformly mixed using a Reclaimer. All clods, lumps, and rocks over 40mm were removed from the surface.  The surface was then compacted to 95% using vibratory and pneumatic rollers followed by a 15-ton steel drum finish roller. Once final compaction and shaping were complete the surface was left to cure. A surface seal using the EBS Soil Stabilizer was applied using 4 coats over the entire wearing course surface, left to cure and then the roads were opened for traffic.

Soil & Dust Solutions was contacted to construct the ramp and crusher tip area for the Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine. Lab testing was conducted in order to determine the mix design that would provide the desired results in the most cost-efficient manner for the wearing course. Once the mix design was determined the construction began. The area was properly shaped including line and levels allowing for adequate drainage and then an in-situ deep milling machine (Reclaimer) was used to mix the EBS dilution with the soil bringing it to the optimum moisture content prior to compact to 98%. During this process, all particles in excess of 40mm were removed from the surface to ensure that the ideal grading modulus was adhered to. Following the compaction of the 200mm layer, the surface was pre-wet to loosen the tension of the soil to allow for better penetration of the EBS Soil Stabilizer. The EBS Soil Stabilizer was applied in 4 even coats in order to seal the wearing course layer and act as a dust suppressant. This is the largest crusher tip in the Southern hemisphere and is subject to the constant traffic of CAT 789C Haul Trucks.

At Great Basin Gold Burnstone Mine located near Balfour in South Africa, the main traffic areas within the mine had become overcome by fugitive and windborne dust making mine dust abatement/suppression a requirement. The road was shaped and prepared using a grader and then EBS was applied for the base layer construction using a Reclaimer followed by an EBS Surface Seal providing a wearing course that was dust-free and only required routine sweeping for maintenance. Anglo American Modikwa Platinum Mine in Steelpoort, South Africa contacted Soil & Dust Solutions, our local agent,  seeking a solution for mine road dust control on mine roads throughout and surrounding the mine. After a site assessment, it was determined that if the roads were prepared and shaped properly a surface seal using EBS Soil Stabilizer would be the correct solution for their needs. Soil & Dust Solutions instructed the mine on the proper preparation needed to ensure a successful application and after proper preparation of the road surfaces the EBS was applied to the surface providing a wearing course that is protected from erosion, has improved visibility as surface dust was eliminated, does not require any future watering or grading, is non-slippery, is UV and weather-resistant, is PM10 and PM2.5 compliant in terms of dust control and does not stick to vehicles or tires.

In efforts to run their operations in an environmentally responsible way Palabora Mining Company has become certified for the ISO 14001 environmental management system and maintains a plan for the eventual closure of operations including the management of social and environmental impacts on the local community. Their search for environmentally friendly and technologically advanced products for the suppression and control of dust has led them to Soil & Dust Solutions.

The mine haul road was swept and cleared of all fugitive dust and debris and then EBS was applied as a surface seal. In order to keep the flow of traffic without interruption to the mining activities, one side of the road was treated at a time allowing traffic to flow on the other side.

As part of their Environmental Management System, Palabora Mining took the decision to control the dust generated by their mining operations throughout the mine. The areas of concern included the parking area for the mining offices, the in-plant road, and the area in front of the workshop.  Durasolution (dust abatement application) was selected for these areas as they receive heavy traffic and are subject to large amounts of fugitive dust from wind, traffic, and from falling off the back of the heavily loaded trucks. The areas were prepared using a grader to remove foreign debris and to bring the excess dust level down to the desired thickness of approximately 1 cm to allow for maximum penetration of the Durasolution. The application was done using a pump and spray system loaded in the back of a truck and the areas were treated with two coats of Durasolution. Traffic was allowed to flow during application without interruption to the mining operations. The Durasolution (dust abatement application) acts as a compaction aid, increases stability, continually wets the surface suppressing the dust, is PM10 and PM2.5 compliant, will help reduce dust-related illnesses, and is environmentally friendly.

Xstrata Coal, Witbank, South Africa contacted Soil and Dust Solutions to construct a Mine Haul Road Diversion to temporarily divert the route of their Mine Haul Trucks. Soil & Dust Solutions provided on-site assistance and technical expertise with the construction and surface seal of the Mine Haul Road Diversion. A materials investigation of local material was conducted of a stockpile on site this material was able to be used in conjunction with EBS Stabilizer as the integration of EBS allowed for the required CBR and specification to be met.  This material was used to raise the surface which was then shaped and brought to the proper line and levels then compacted. Then an EBS Surface Seal was applied that resulted in a fully protected wearing course surface.  Soil Solutions provided the design and consultation services as well as the on-site technical assistance for the project.
