Harmony Kalgold is an open-pit mine situated 55km southwest of Mahikeng in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The management of Mine Tailings Storage Facilities is a critical part of any mining operation and forms one of its largest future liabilities.  Therefore, effective management is critical long after the mining operations have ceased, the Tailings Storage Facilities remain.

To minimize current and future liabilities, Soil & Dust Solutions has devised many specialized applications for use on Mine Tailings Storage Facilities, which will reduce water usage, eliminate dust and help prevent erosion.

Project Description: The Tailings Storage Facility was treated in conjunction with our partner Hydromulch using a Finn Hydroseeding machine equipped with a specialized spray nozzle to apply the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS).

Result: The treatment of the TSF will provide a long-term sustainable solution for dust suppression, without the continuous use of water or expensive and ineffective irrigation systems. Effective Tailings Management will ensure decreased liability, environmental compliance, a reduced effect on the neighbouring community, and an overall decreased environmental impact.

The client was looking for a cost-effective environmentally compliant sustainable solution for dust abatement and erosion control on one of their stockpiles.

Recognizing that their activities can have an impact on the surrounding community, their own employees, and the environment it was time to act in order to maintain compliance with their own sustainability policy of protecting the environment, human rights as well as health, and safety.

Soil & Dust Solutions devised a specialized application to apply the EBS Soil Stabilizer to the stockpile, which will improve the integrity of the structure, reduce water usage, eliminate dust and erosion and prevent windblown and fugitive dust.

Khumani Mine Stockpile Report

A stockpile treatment for dust control and erosion prevention was conducted at ASSMANG Khumani Iron Ore Mine, whereby two adjacent stockpiles were documented, one was treated with a surface application of EBS Soil Stabilizer, while the other was left untreated. After three months 169 tonnes of material was lost from the untreated stockpile, no measurable material was lost from the treated areas, and in fact, vegetation had grown.

Full details of the independent monitoring including weather and wind conditions are available upon request in a compiled report which included three years of monitoring. Despite recommended maintenance applications every 18 months, no maintenance whatsoever has been done and the surface of the treated stockpile remains stabilized after 5 years while allowing vegetation to grow and providing dust control.

The Eastplats Platinum Mine in South Africa required an immediate solution for dust control on the Mine Tailings complex as the dust was causing problems for the local farming community, as well as hazardous work conditions.

As the traditional method of using water through a sprinkler system proved to be very expensive as well as ineffective, Soil & Dust Solutions was asked to develop a long-term effective sustainable dust control solution. With access being a problem a spray bar was attached to the arm of an excavator which allowed for all areas to be treated. The treatment was environmentally safe; completely negated the need or use of water or an expensive and maintenance-intensive sprinkler system; improved relations with neighbouring communities and will remain effective for 24 or more months before requiring any maintenance.
