Water Savings in Mines- Cost Saving Study and Solutions

A live case study on Mine Costs and Water Savings, with one application of EBS

Water Use in Mining & the cost implication

Water use in mines is a practice as old as mining itself. Even though water is fast becoming one of the most precious resources on earth, many mines still do not take action to reduce water use and control the effect of water wastage on communities in which they operate. Drought has become prevalent in many of the communities where mining operations take place and therefore watering roads to suppress dust is no longer a sustainable practice.

5,828,900 liters of water per day were being wasted on watering roads

Case Study on cost & water saving in the Syama Mali Mine Project

Soil Solutions set out to create a real ongoing case study, where we monitor the number of litres of water saved as well as the associated costs involved. The results are truly astonishing. Not only has the mine saved $371 040 with an initial investment of only $11,200, but it has also saved just over 4.4 billion litres of water in just over two years. All of these savings are due to one application of the EBS surface seal.

The Solution- EBS Surface Seal

EBS Surface seal is the solution that delivered these results.

An EBS Surface Seal provides a dust-free road surface which is waterproof, flexible pavement that has a high load-bearing capacity that is skid resistant.

ONE Application of EBS Surface Seal will protect the stabilized surface from loss of fine material, provide effective dust and erosion control depending on application rate and traffic. Most importantly this road surface will never require grading or watering, providing a sustainable solution and significantly reduced maintenance delivering Reduced Costs & Benefits.

Below are the cost implications the application of EBS had on the mine.

Soil Solutions is awarded first phase of internal Road Upgrades at the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project in Kenya

Having already invested a significant amount in the initial road construction required to transport the 365 wind turbines throughout the 250 km wind farm, the roads now require an upgrade. In total 1095 blades spanning 55m and 365 tower measuring 36m travelled the gravel roads.

LTWP contacted Soil Solutions for a solution. Soil Solutions conducted a site assessment and then developed a long term cost effective sustainable solution that will protect the initial capital infrastructure investment and allow for a much improved road network, while reducing required future maintenance. This includes the integration of Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) to stabilize and surface seal the initial 50 km section of the road network. This will allow for a hard surface fully protected from any erosion or material lost. This will also eliminate any wind or vehicle generated dust and increase the efficiency of the turbines. To ensure that the project is concluded in a cost effective and efficient manner a RSL Recycler Machine was also recommended for the project.

Soil Solutions is extremely excited about this project as it is the largest Wind Farm on the African continent and will be providing 1,250GWh of electricity which is 20% of the country’s demand, making Kenya not only the greenest country in Africa, but one of the top globally. To be able to provide sustainable solutions that will further reduce environmental impact is something that we are proud of.
