Harmony Kalgold is an open pit mine situated 55km southwest of Mahikeng in the northwest Province of South Africa. The management of Mine Tailings Storage Facilities is a critical part of any mining operation and forms one of its largest future liabilities.  Therefore, effective management is critical long after the mining operations have ceased, the Tailings Storage Facilities remain.

To minimize current and future liabilities, Soil & Dust Solutions has devised many specialized applications for use on Mine Tailings Storage Facilities, which will reduce water usage, eliminate dust and help prevent erosion.

Project Description: The Tailings Storage Facility was treated in conjunction with our partner Hydromulch using a Finn Hydroseeding machine equipped with a specialized spray nozzle to apply the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS).

Result: The treatment of the TSF will provide a long-term sustainable solution for dust suppression, without the continuous use of water or expensive and ineffective irrigation systems. Effective Tailings Management will ensure decreased liability, environmental compliance, a reduced effect on the neighbouring community and an overall decreased environmental impact.

The client was looking for a cost effective environmentally compliant sustainable solution for dust abatement and erosion control on one of their stockpiles.

Recognizing that their activities can have an impact on the surrounding community, their own employees and the environment it was time to act in order to maintain compliance with their own sustainability policy of protecting the environment, human rights as well as health and safety.

Soil & Dust Solutions devised a specialized application to apply the EBS Soil Stabilizer to the stockpile, which will improve the integrity of the structure, reduce water usage, eliminate dust and erosion and prevent windblown and fugitive dust.

The Lake Turkana Wind Power project is located in Loiyangalani District, Marsabit County, Kenya. It comprises of 365 wind turbines, eachwith a capacity of 850kW, and a high voltage substation that will be connected to the Kenyan national grid through an associated Transmission Line.

The wind farm is ready to provide 310MW of reliable, low cost and green energy that will power one million Kenyan homes.

Having already invested a significant amount in the initial road construction required to transport the 365 wind turbines throughout the 250 km wind farm, the roads now require an upgrade. In total 1095 blades spanning 55m and 365 towers measuring 36m travelled the gravel roads.

LTWP contacted Soil Solutions for a cost-effective and sustainable solution.  Soil Solutions conducted a site assessment and then developed a long term cost-effective sustainable solution that will protect the initial capital infrastructure investment and allow for a much-improved road network while reducing required future maintenance.  This includes the integration of Engineered Base Stabilizer  (EBS) to stabilize and surface seal the initial 50 km section of the road network.  This will allow for a hard surface fully protected from any erosion or material lost.  This will also eliminate any wind or vehicle generated dust and increase the efficiency of the turbines. To ensure that the project is concluded in a cost-effective and efficient manner an RSL Recycler Machine was also recommended for the project.

 

Application: The existing surface is ripped, scarified or recycled, then shaped to provide proper drainage, compacted to a smooth finish then sealed with the EBS Soil Stabilizer in multiple coats until the point of refusal is reached. The EBS is allowed to penetrate then the road is opened for traffic.

Result: a re-constructed surface layer with a newly created wearing course with complete dust elimination, improved skid resistance, total preservation of fines and material, is non-slippery, water and UV resistant, free from the formation of potholes, rutting, and corrugation, improved load-bearing capacity, increased tensile strength and a reduced environmental impact.

 

THE EBS SURFACE SEALED ROAD SURFACE IS NEVER TO BE GRADED OR WATERED … The objective of the EBS Surface Seal is to eliminate the requirement for any future watering or grading of the surface.

The Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing  Project in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

In the interest of improving roads in their rural communities the Ondo State Government, through Governor Akeredolu, has entered the World Bank assisted Rural Access Mobility Programme (RAMP), later renamed the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), with the intention of creating farm to market access roads.

The objective of the Project is to bring about enhanced productive capacity and rapid development of Nigeria’s rural areas and the improvement of the living standards of its dwellers, through the provision of improved and efficient rural transport infrastructure necessary for economic and social development.

Project Description: An area of the Molege Road link to the Owo Township Road was selected to perform a demonstration with the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) to show the advantages over the asphalt method. 

Application: The existing surface was scarified, then shaped to provide proper drainage, compacted to a smooth finish then sealed with the Engineered Base Stabilizer using multiple coats until the point of refusal was reached. Limpopo Lipadi Private Game & Wilderness Reserve located in the Southern Tuli Block in Botswana received Governmental approval for the construction of an airstrip on the reserve and then contacted Soil and Dust Solutions for a solution to preserve and protect the surface from erosion and material loss due to heavy rains and wind, will require less maintenance, blend in with the environment and be safe for the flora, fauna and wildlife present on the reserve.

Soil and Dust Solutions determined that once the airstrip, taxiway, and parking areas were constructed that the application of an EBS Surface Seal would be the best solution to achieve the above-mentioned objectives.

Upon arrival to complete the application of the EBS Surface Seal, it was determined that the surface of the airstrip required repair in many areas and that the taxiway and parking area required further work as well. A team was assembled and the repairs on the runway commenced using borrow pit material and EBS while simultaneously the taxiway and parking area surfaces were scarified and then compacted again creating a smooth finish in preparation for the EBS Surface Seal.

Once the repairs were complete the EBS Surface Seal was applied using multiple coats providing for a dust-free airstrip, which is protected from erosion and extreme weather conditions, blends in with the reserve environment, provides a smooth surface for aircraft landings and is safe for all wildlife within the reserve as during the application two ostriches conducted their own inspection while many other animals including impala, baboons, wildebeest, and warthogs were frequent visitors to the airstrip during the construction period.

Kalahari Runway – Wilderness Safaris contracted Soil & Dust Solutions, with its local construction partner Shuma Construction to construct a runway  in Central Kalahari, Botswana  — Kalahari Plains.  From initial land clearing, to site preparation, base layer construction and stabilization, and final surface seal using EBS (Emulsified Base Stabilizer).

The sensitive environment required a solution that was both environmentally compliant and sustainable in terms of maintenance and cost, AND which would stabilize the sandy silty soil.  Soil & Dust Solutions provided the answer with our highly effective EBS application method and using the right equipment.

Having a desperate need for hydro seeding and erosion control of the berm (embankment) outside their newly constructed offices Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African Agent of Soil Solutions, was contacted for assistance. Soil & Dust Solutions offered to treat the berm with their environmentally friendly product Hydrotac to eliminate the erosion problems occurring from the heavy rains as well as to prevent the washing of the grass seed to hold it in place and encourage grass growth over the berm, therefore providing a solution to the existing erosion problem as well as contributing to a more pleasant working atmosphere.

The preparation of the area to be treated included the removal of large stones and debris, cleaning of the drains, spreading of fertilizer and grass seed followed by raking of the entire area to mix the seed and fertilizer with the soil as well as loosen the tension of the soil to allow for proper penetration of the Hydrotac.

Hydrotac was applied evenly over the prepared area of the berm using two coats with a simple pump and spray system with an adjustable spray nozzle to control the flow rate and ensure the specified application rate was adhered to. During the Hydrotac application, 4 mm of rain fell with no detrimental effect as the performance of the Hydrotac took immediate effect preventing any washing of the product, therefore, holding all seed and fertilizer in place while directing all water runoff into the drains.

After the Hydrotac application an additional 3 mm of rain fell that evening and during the first week after application there was a total of 260mm rain, which had no harmful effects as the seed has still held in place and germination had already began.

Soil & Dust Solutions was retained to provide dust control solutions for an open-pit mining operation in Botswana.  The objectives were to improve visibility, road safety, and production efficiency. After proper preparation of the area which only entailed a sweeping of the surface, A water truck was used to apply a surface application of Durasolution to the road surface. This proved to be an effective dust suppression treatment which was also effective on fugitive dust. This treatment negated the need for water for dust suppression and provided a much safer driving environment than previous methods and products used by the mine.

Nkomati Nickel contacted Soil Solutions to provide a dust abatement solution for the haul road for their mine located in Machadodorp, South Africa. Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African agent for Soil Solutions provided technical assistance with the preparation of the road and the application of the Durasolution product. Durasolution was chosen for this project  as the main objective was for dust prevention and the haul road sees frequent traffic from tracked vehicles which would cause damage to a stabilized wearing course surface. Durasolution starts working upon contact and continues to perform even when the soil is re-worked, thus effectively eliminating the need for grading, watering or any other form of dust control. The initial application can perform for prolonged periods, with minimal maintenance required.

Soil & Dust Solutions was contacted to provide a safe and cost-effective solution for the decline and underground areas – Underground Dust Control

DURASOLUTION was applied to the areas.  This required that the areas were first swept of all loose debris and then treated.  The application was fast and easy, as DURASOLUTION is applied neat, no dilution required, it is a perpetual wetting agent, so no curing time was required and the areas could be used immediately after treatment. Clear and odourless makes this an ideal solution for underground dust control.
